Architect Anne Holtrop Finds a New Lease on Life in the Desert By Shumi Bose Since relocating two years ago from the Netherlands to Bahrain, where he’s set up a studio in the capital, Manama, architect Anne Holtrop has been exposed to different aesthetic influences — strong light and deep shadows — but has also introduced some rather more deliberate changes into his practice — axial Anne Holtrop has a degree in architecture, but he previously trained as an engineer and subsequently worked as an assistant to the artist Krijn de Koning. As a result, his approach to architecture is sculptural, insisting on the difference between ‘making’ and ‘representing’. Anne Holtrop (1977) graduated in 2005 from the Academie van Bouwkunst in Amsterdam with a cum laude degree in architecture and in 2009 started his own studio.

The same year Anne Holtrop opened a second studio in Bahrain which is currently working on the design and building of the Sheikh Isa Bin Ali Al-Khalifa Museum, the Siyadi Pearl Museum, the Murad Boutique Hotel and the Experts: Prof.Dr. Manfred Heuberger (Head of Advanced Fibers, EMPA), Dr. Mariana Popescu (post-doctoral researcher, ETH Block Research Group, Institute of Technology in Architecture), Peter Rütimann (application engineer and adhesive specialist, 3M), Mario Monotti (structural engineer and professor of Structural Design at the Accademia di Anne Holtrop doesn’t see architecture as problem solving. He begins the design process with a drawing; a formal exploration that is both his first step and his end goal; both the aim of, and the constraint for the built output.
Opting instead for a much less controlled proposal, Holtrop argues that non-referential architecture is more interesting and more contemporary – he isn’t interested in nostalgia. The traditional coral stone material characteristic of the area is still put to use, and concrete elements are cast with ‘unconstrained’ sand borders. The 38-year-old Dutchman Anne Holtrop talks about his work with an artist’s sensibility, extracting form from existing, or completely random, conditions.
